Story

THIS IS A GROUP DONATION PAGE

Please read the whole story - it has ended up longer than any of us anticipated, or wanted ...

Doherty’s Destiny is a local charity that was borne from tragedy. Currently, 200 teenagers a year take their own lives. James Doherty committed suicide at the age of 16.
James’ mum, Joanne, created this charity and channels every ounce of her being into Doherty’s Destiny. It has 3 clear objectives:-

1. Positive mental health in young people
2. Tower Woods to be a community park
3. Parents of suicide victims support group

There are few young people who are not affected by mental health issues.

THE CHALLENGE
The National 3 Peaks are Snowdon, Scafell Pike & Ben Nevis - this challenge is not a new idea. Even cycling between them has been achieved .... BUT to complete this in 3 days is a huge undertaking. Here’s the stats - 494 miles of cycling with 4000m of ascent and then approx 3500m of mountain running!!!!!

THE PARTICIPANTS
Pete, Phill, Dave & Karl - all amazing amateur endurance athletes with huge respect for this challenge. They are more than aware of the amount of training the next few months hold.
This saw Karl being honest with himself and the team by admitting he couldn’t commit the time to training. Hats off.
Chris Horner, a friend & GB duathlete, has come into the team in place of Karl. Thank you Chris.
Then, the last 24 hours has been a bombshell. Dave has passed away. He took the decision to end his life. Massive shock to us all. For a moment this challenge was in doubt but Dave wouldn’t want that. He was wholeheartedly devoted to fundraising for such a cause. Joanne Doherty has been wonderfully supportive and has given her blessing for this challenge to celebrate Dave’s memory as well. It won’t be the same without him.

UPDATE: 22.4.19

We have a 4th member of the team!! Joining Pete, Phill & Chris will be Sammie Stuart.  She is 28 years old.  Another great athlete, she completed Bolton Ironman in 2016.  Great to have you on board Sammie!

The journey began with the fabulous four full of excitement & adrenaline .... now we are the tenacious trio and it’s going to be emotional. We will put ourselves through this to prevent suicide in young people in the future. If we help save one person, it will be worth every second of hurt.

Please donate if you can. It will save lives.

All our thanks,
Pete, Phill, Chris & Sammie
