The National Autistic Society is here to transform lives, change attitudes and create a society that works for autistic people. There is still so much to do to increase opportunities, reduce social isolation and build a brighter future for autistic people. With your help, we can make it happen.

Story

On the 7th April 2013 I will embark on a race known as the 'toughest footrace on Earth'. The Marathon des Sables.

This is a 155 mile race across the Sahara desert in southern Morocco, and is the equivalent of running 6 marathons in 7 days.

Over the last few months, I have been told that my dedication to training and my plans to run the MDS are an inspiration to some, whilst
others think I'm just plain crazy!
In truth, I view it as a huge challenge, but also it is just one week of my life where I have to dig that little bit deeper and push on through the pain.
When the training gets tough, what inspires me is thoughts of the ongoing and constant bravery shown by families affected by tragedy, like the Hockley family. They have felt the deepest pain imaginable, and yet their overwhelming desire to see some good come of this senseless act leaves me in complete awe.
This family and others like them are the true inspiration in life.

Dylan Hockley grew his angel wings on 14 December 2012, when he died alongside his friends and teachers in the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

His parents are originally from the UK and moved out to the States a few years ago. I met Dylan's father, Ian, on several occasions prior to their move when he visited friends in Jersey.
Dylan's family have created a fund in his memory to help support children with autism and special needs. Dylan was autistic and his parents saw how much progress he was making with the support of his school and additional services. They are committed to making a positive change and help more children achieve their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.

The Hockley's home is now in the US, but they are keen to support the National Autistic Society here in the UK too, so that Dylans wings can be spread back to his birth home. Any donations received from the UK will go directly to help individuals and families here in the UK.
