The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon 2014 · 12 October 2014 ·

The Bone Cancer Research Trust is the leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer. Our mission is to save lives and improve outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness and support.

Story

We are running this half marathon on 12th October not just for fun but to raise vital funds and awareness for The Bone Cancer Research Trust who have provided amazing support to us over the past 7 years.

Pete has not done any exercise since being diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer in 2007 and has been training hard with Harry as his personal coach, therefore we have high expectations for a sub 4 hour half marathon! PLEASE SPONSOR US!!! Anything you can possibly give would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Since being diagnosed in September 2007 Pete has had extensive conventional treatment which ultimately failed. Following this, for the last 5 years he has been having an experimental new drug which has had absolutely amazing results, enabling him to live a relatively normal life.

As of October 2014 the drug company is withdrawing the drug. Originally this drug was developed for common cancers however results on the majority of trials were poor. It was tested on some Ewing's sarcoma patients where it was very successful in a number of patients. The drug is being withdrawn mainly because it will not make enough money for the few patients it saves.

Drug companies are unwilling to fund experimental research into these diseases as the number of patients are small. BCRT specifically fund research in to primary bone cancers with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

Bone cancer mainly affects children, teenagers and young adults. Each year the the UK and Ireland 550 new cases are diagnosed and around 300 people will die from these cancers.

There has been no improvement in bone cancer survival rates in 25 years - which is why it is so hugely important that new research is funded in order to develop new treatments for patients.

This is why we are so keen to support this charity and raise as much money as possible!! Please sponsor us!!
