Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 1914 at the start of the Great War the psychological effects of modern warfare started to be recognised with the many cases of Shell Shock that occurred. While still attributed to “lack of moral fibre”, as the war progressed it began to be treated as a medical condition and from 1916 Craiglockhart Hospital was used psychiatric hospital for the treatment of shell shocked officers.
In May 1919 the Ex-Services Welfare Society now called Combat Stress was founded and has for a century helped former servicemen and women deal with trauma-related mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
On the centenary of its founding I’m cycling 600 miles unsupported along the Western Front from Belgium to Switzerland.
