“9 PEAKS CHALLENGE”
WE DID IT!!! Almost!
Day 1. Ben Macdui and Cairn Gorm, 24 klms completed in reasonable weather in 8.5 hours. We laid a commemorative stone chosen by the Mpanza children of Fugitives Drift on the summit of Ben Macdui ( the water from which run into the River Spey, David’s favourite salmon river )
Day 2. Braeriach summit was reached in 5 hours of climbing in appalling weather conditions. Our Mountain Ranger Guide deemed it to dangerous to continue “no argument” so sadly we had to retreat back down; 29klms covered in 9 hours, a hard day.
Day 3. Cairn Mor Dearg and Ben Nevis. 26 klms in 9 hours. A very hard day, very steep climb to the summit of CMD and over the arête to the north face of Ben Nevis, most in teaming rain and high winds, NOT the tourist route!
Day 4. Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag, 12 klms in 5 hours. Rain, strong winds and dense low cloud, couldn’t see a thing. Thank goodness for a compass and map and a brilliant mountain guide, who knew exactly where we were.
On behalf of myself, Sacha, The Rattray Foundation, and the little Zulu school of Mabaso, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind and generous support, it has been truly fantastic our initial aim was to raise £ 10,000 and we are almost there.
An experience never to be forgotten, made possible with the back up of Sue, and two simply amazing mountain guides, Rex Sircus and Rosie Goolden, whose help and encouragement got us through some truly appalling weather, to achieve what we did.
Peter Spence and Sacha Ballard.
