Climb Kilimanjaro for CORD · 18 November 2007

Cord is an international charity that works with people in highly sensitive and oppressive contexts to transform dysfunctional relationships into those that create peaceful & inclusive societies. Our vision, mission and values are inspired by the Christian faith. Our Vision is of a world where all people live in the fullness of peace; having the freedom to flourish and live free from fear. Our Mission is to transform dysfunctional relationships between individuals and communities and those holding power into positive and thriving relationships built on mutual dependency and trust. Cord works in partnership with local community based organisations to develop their skills, knowledge and expertise with a view to enabling them to more effectively advocate on behalf of communities with government, private companies, and others with power and leverage to impact the quality of life of disadvantaged communities.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

My name is Philip Haines.  I am a competitive person who likes a challenge.  I also like helping others to take control and transform their own lives.  When I heard CORD were looking for volunteers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,895m), in February 2008 to raise funds for their work among refugees, it was a challenge I could not refuse.

My attempt took me to 5000metres before I had to come down the mountain due to the effects of severe altitude sickness.

CORD's mission is to help people in developing countries, who have suffered as a result of war, to build peace for themselves and their communities.  According to the UN, 70% of the world's poorest countries have suffered through war since 1990.  War leads to poverty which can lead to further conflict.  CORD's pioneering approach focuses on supporting local education, enterprise and environmental projects.

People like Ahmad, who was forced by armed militia to flee to Chad from Darfur in 2004.  He lost most of his possessions, which meant he also lost his livelihood and his hope for the future.  CORD's community workers have helped set him up with some money and equipment running a teashop in a refugee camp. This means he is now earning a living, providing for his family and, when he goes back home, he has a skill which means he can, with others, help restore and re-build his community.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: CORD - (Christian Outreach - Relief and Development) will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
