Story

Our Dad Dennis Mitchell passed away peacefully on 4th November 2020, five days before his 93rd birthday. He had a stroke on 15th September, then after a short spell in hospital spent his last few weeks in The Springs Care Home, Malvern, where he received excellent care.

After graduating from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College London, Dad emigrated to Canada where he worked as a lecturer and mining engineer. Having married his childhood sweetheart Vera, he returned to the UK in 1955, when he started a career in the steel industry which culminated in his appointment as Managing Director at Round Oak Steel Works. Having retired earlier than planned when Round Oak was forced to close in late 1982, he was then instrumental in setting up a training company in the West Midlands, MOST (Midlands Oak Skills and Technology), and later was awarded MBE for services to training in the West Midlands.

During the last few years of his working life, Dad suffered from palpitations – he was in his late 60’s when he had his first heart attack. This was followed by cardiac surgery - a quadruple by-pass at the age of 69 – and then a pacemaker. The treatment he received from the health service, both here and in Madeira where he and our Mum spent their holidays, enabled him to have a long, happy and active retirement. He loved sailing, particularly in Pembrokeshire where he and our Mum lived for 25 years, and was a member of Pembroke Haven Yacht Club, including a term as Commodore; he was also an active member of Tenby Golf Club, taking on the role of Club Captain for a while; and he and our Mum would walk for miles along the levadas when on their holidays in Madeira.

When Mum and Dad moved to Herefordshire in later years, both became enthusiastic regulars at the local BHF cardiac rehabilitation keep fit classes, and Dad carried on playing at Dymock Golf Club up until about 3 years ago, not long before his 90th birthday!

We hope that your donation to the British Heart Foundation will enable others to live their lives to the full after cardiac surgery in the way that our Dad did. To live well for 24 years after a quadruple by-pass – not bad!
