Hook Church Big Sponsored Cycle Ride · 29 September 2021

The Cycle Ride is raising Money and Awareness towards the restoration of the church. St Marys Church, the oldest building in the area of Hook and Goole, is going to be 800 years old in 2025.

Story

St Mary's needs a new roof, a disabled toilet, kitchenette facilities, we want it to have flexible space (moveable seating) for better worship and community use. It also needs new heating, better lighting, stonework repairs and some underpinning.

The church is 800 years old in 2025 so by then we're aiming to have completed these works and developed ways of increasing community involvement in the building and church.

The last restoration in 1844 was mainly paid for by the Sotheron Estcourts - landowners in Hook then. Thomas Estcourt ( MP for Devizes - home Shipton Moyne) had married Lucy Sotheron (from Hook) they had homes in both places and so a ride between their homes seemed appropriate and a good challenge. The ride is actually to start from Devizes Town Square at 3pm on 29th Sept - as there is a statue of Thomas there.
