On 25th July 2020 Cian Hughes, Rob Aubrey, Dan Hayward , Keiron Webb and myself along with a support crew of support crew of Michael Drummond were meant to be attempting to climb the famous 3 Peaks Challenge. (Climbing the three highest peaks across England (Scafell Pike), Scotland (Ben Nevis) and Wales (Snowden) within 24 hours). We then postpone the challenge until October 10-14th, however, had to postpone again. We are now determined to complete it this September 11-14th 2021!!

Why are we doing it? To raise money for a second Vein Finder, but this time it is for the Children's A&E department at St Mary's Hospital Isle of Wight. This has come about after one of Phoebe's friends Esme had a traumatic experience recently when admitted to A&E via ambulance, where the doctors struggled to find a vein to give her fluids and medicine. After liaising with the hospital we discussed it wouldn't always be possible to bring their Vein Finder down from Children's Ward to A&E and thought it would be better if we could have a separate one just for using on the children admitted to A&E. The Vein Finder will help Doctors locate veins in children quicker and easier causing less discomfort for children and avoid them becoming pincushions. This piece of equipment costs around £4500.

I have witnessed this myself as Phoebes veins are small and hard for the doctors to find and can honestly say that it is a horrible thing to see your child go through, but you know that they have to in order to get the medication or drip into them.

For people who don’t know Phoebe. When she was 5 days old we found out that she had Trisomy 18 or Edwards Syndrome, which is a life limiting condition. Babies with the condition don’t normally make birth and the ones that do on average only live for 5-10 days. Phoebe is now 2.5years old. We have had our highs, lows and very lows during this time, including a number of hospital stays.

A couple of times she has needed to have a drip and antibiotics given into a vein and to no fault of the doctors (who are amazing) they struggled to find and get in to one trying her hand, her foot, and her arm. It was horrible to watch.

The vein finder will make such a massive difference to help the doctors provide a more efficient and successful care for babies and children on the ward.
