We use the power of sport and education to tackle youth unemployment across the UK

Story

This event is now over but you may continue to donate if you wish

Hot from his tour of universities across the UK Tom Miles aka Photosmudger has kindly agreed to hold one of his workshops especially for us. Not only is Tom a member of the London Strobist Flickr group but he is also a professional photographer with an impressive list of clients (Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Runner's World, Golf Monthly, Penguin Books, Hodder Publishing, Maxim etc)

It promises to be a very special day. Tom's workshop will cover aspects of business, creativity, getting and finding work, technical problems, financial issues and how you can set yourself up for a professional career. After the introductory talk you will be given a photographic assignment to carry out and you will be expected to not only correctly interpret the brief and bring back photos, but also provide appropriate paperwork.

We will meet at Calumet in Drummond Street for a 10am start on Saturday the 6th February 2010. Tom will give us a talk for roughly an hour and a quarter. Then before 12 we will be handed out details of an assignment to be completed by 3pm. There will be a break while Tom looks over the work and then we will have a critique. As a bonus Tom will be bring us Emma Taylor a Photographer and Illustrators Agent at  Vue Represents and they will give anyone who wants one a portfolio critique. David Robbins, from Nikon's training department will also be on hand with lots of Nikon's latest gear for you to play with, as well as to answer any technical queries you may have.  Normally at these events David and Tom run an off-camera flash lighting workshop, but given this audience, they thought it would be a bit redundant!

It should be a tremendously valuable day for those of you aspiring to be professional photographers and it will be fun doing the assignments too.

In order to secure a place we have set up this justgiving page for The Street League a charity selected by Tom. The Street League aims to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people and adults in the UK using the power of sport.

Make a donation of £10 on the just giving page with your name and flickr id and you will be on the guest list. The first 30 people to donate will be on the guest list. Unfortunately there will be no refunds.

On the day you should bring along your strobist gear so that you can perform the photographic assignment. You will be expected to submit finished photos at the 3pm deadline, so if you expect to do any editing please bring along a laptop and card reader as well .

Also don't forget to bring along your portfolio. It can be in either printed or electronic format.

Have a look at Toms blog "Photosmudger on the Road" for more information on what to expect. His blog will give you the background  information you need to complete the assignment successfully.
