Working with global charities, grassroots partners and international volunteers we are working to break the cycle of canine-human infection of rabies. Through mass dog vaccination, dog population control, education and training we will free Tanzania from rabies forever: one community at a time

Story

Hi!

I’m Phyllis, and I’m taking on the Kiltwalk to help end rabies in Tanzania, forever: saving lives and preventing needless suffering for thousands of dogs and people.

I founded the anti-rabies charity Four Steps to Freedom in 2014 after seeing the terrible impact of rabies at first hand:

** 1500 people die from rabies every year in Tanzania, after being bitten by infected dogs.

In 2014, for the first time I met a family who had lost their child to
rabies – I knew at once I had to help stop this totally preventable
disease

**Many thousands of Tanzanian dogs die horrible deaths – either infected by rabies, or
mutilated and left to die following attacks by people desperate to save
their families from a fatal bite.

My own dog, Gongo, is a Tanzanian street dog who lost a leg and part of his face in a brutal, unprovoked machete attack.

**All
this suffering can be prevented if we vaccinate and sterilise dogs, and
educate local communities in safe and humane animal handling.

Please support my Kiltwalk so we can stop rabies, sooner!

RABIES: THE PLANET'S MOST DEADLY DISEASE

Rabies is 99% deadly for people and animals, but also 100% preventable.

World Health Organisation research shows that almost all human rabies cases are caused by dog bites, and that the only effective way of combatting
rabies is to vaccinate, spay and neuter dog populations in affected
areas.

Since 2014, Four Steps to Freedom has supported local partners in Tanzania to wipe out
rabies in 21 communities of Tanzania, vaccinating over 70,000 domestic animals and spaying neutering over 5,000 with the support of over 200 veterinary volunteer from around the world.

LET'S END RABIES SOONER

I am taking on the Kiltwalk to raise funds and awareness, so that we can take our work to the next level. At Four Steps to Freedom we are
determined to accelerate the pace of change in Tanzania, with the
construction of a dedicated veterinary centre of excellence in 2024. The new centre will serve as a base, from which we will:

• Expand our vaccination, spay and neuter operations to vaccinate 20,000 animals per year and spay and neuter 8,000 per year
• Provide housing for 2 permanent international volunteer vets
• Run four vet training courses per year, equipping 24 local vets per
year with the small-animal surgery skills that are vital to control
local animal populations and prevent the resurgence of disease.

In Tanzania, our volunteer veterinary teams are hard at work vaccinating,
spaying and neutering domestic dogs; educating local populations and
training local vets in domestic animal surgery. I am taking on the
Kiltwalk to raise awareness of their work.

By donating here, you can help support their vital work too.

Together we can stop rabies in Tanzania  Any donation you can spare will mean the world to me and Four Steps to Freedom.

Thank you!
