Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
A diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes used to be a death sentence until the discovery 100 years ago of the hormone insulin. I inject myself 4+ times a day and it's kept me healthily alive for 23 years and my older sister for 53.
This July, I'm planning to cycle 500 miles around the north west coast of Scotland with 3 fabulous women (Katie, Tamsin and Janet) as a 50th birthday challenge: 10 miles for each of my 50 years on this planet. All that cycling might mean some days I actually won't need to inject much insulin at all, but I'll be using it as an opportunity to fundraise for 2 charities that are very important to me: 'Mothers for Mothers' (see my other fundraising page) and 'Life for a Child' -
https://lifeforachild.org. This international charity believes 'no child should die of diabetes' and provides insulin, diabetes supplies and education for children with T1 diabetes living in under-resourced countries.
With insulin on board, I can lead a full and active life filled with adventures, and I hope the funds raised from my 'BIG 50' bike ride will gift the same opportunity to kids diagnosed with T1D in other parts of the world.
UPDATE: Thanks to incredible support, by day 4 - the big 86-miler, when alternative accommodation had to be found in Ullapool, a further 26 miles beyond our original 60-mile endpoint in Dundonnell - my fundraising passed £1,000. So I'm pushing on: NC500 completed in 9 days so I'm keeping going with a 50-mile ride every week until my 50th on the 5th September. 1,049 miles cycle and still rising!
