Hospiscare provides free and specialised nursing to the terminally ill in Exeter, Mid and East Devon. It looks after more than 700 patients at any one time, supporting patients in their own homes and in its hospice. It relies on the generosity of the community to provide this vital service.

Story

I lost half my sight as a result of a stroke in 2007 and my
husband Richard passed away at the hospice in Exeter in 2011 after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.  Since these events I have become something of a fundraiser.  For Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund I raised over £6,000.  Shaving my hair raised £2,000, and in walking
the whole 479 miles of the Santiago de Compestela in 32 days I exceeded my initial fundraising target of £2,000 to over £4,000.  I am now focussing my efforts on Hospiscare who took such great care of Richard and my family through very difficult times.  I've decided on a Fundraising Walk, taking over three months, going from Dunnet Head (just north of John O’Groats) to Lands End, via Holy Island.  My preparation and organisation is well under way but my challenge begins properly on 1st May 2018 when I travel on the Caledonian Sleeper train from Euston to Inverness. I hope to finish on my birthday on 19th August.

I relish the challenge of the walk and am happy to cover my
travelling and food costs, B&B accommodation alone would have cost me over £2,000.  Therefore, I have bought a tent and will camp or hostel where needed, however some very kind folks along the way, attached mostly to churches, have also offered the odd night’s bed and board free-of-charge. To them, I am truly grateful!

Hospiscare are a local to Exeter, mid and east Devon charity that works
with, but are not part of, the NHS. Reliant on donations and gifts in wills
they only receive 20% of their funding from the government. Every year they care for over 2,000 patients and their families living with a terminal illness. Read more about them at www.hospiscare.co.uk

My initial fundraising target for this challenge is £2,000, but I would really like to raise a whole lot more for this fantastic charity.  If you would like to support Pip’s Plod 2018 with a donation on this page, ALL of which will be going to Hospiscare, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
