Why Plan works in

A bitter civil war lasting for over ten years and a succession of natural disasters has left El a poor country with one third of the population living on less than £1 per day. Less than half of children go on to secondary school and over 20% of adults are illiterate.

Providing communities with the appropriate skills and knowledge they need to confront the risk of a disaster before the worst happens, and encouraging them to take action can greatly reduce its impact; protecting livelihoods and assets and preventing financial, physical and emotional distress.

How you can help

We aim to raise funds to strengthen communities’ resilience to disasters by increasing their awareness of the risks they face and advising them on how they can reduce them. Children themselves will play a crucial role in disaster prevention, raising awareness and coming up with innovative ideas to lessen the risks they face.

Plan will help to set up and support children associations and youth clubs which will increase there member’s awareness and encourage them to devise campaigns and create drawings highlighting the need for disaster risk reduction in the community.

Plan enables poor communities to take action together to achieve children’s rights to an education, decent healthcare, clean drinking water and more. We give long-term practical support so poor communities can improve the lives of their children and themselves. We also campaign to change the way a whole range of adults - from parents to politicians - think and act, because we know their decisions can perpetuate poverty. 

Children themselves can be powerful advocates for change, so we encourage them to take part in decision making, from village councils to national assemblies. And because children will be the leaders of tomorrow, we believe that strengthening their voices now will create a fairer, better world - now and in the future.
