Platform combines art, activism, education and research. Whether supporting people in the Niger Delta to stand up to oil companies, researching the impact of oil pipelines or producing art and poetry with young people to explore issues of race and power, Platform’s work inspires positive change.

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

In 1995 the famous writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and his eight colleagues were executed by the Nigerian government. They were leaders of an ongoing campaign to raise national and international awareness of the devestation being caused by the international oil industry on the environment and the communities of the Niger Delta.

Ken Saro-Wiwa insisted on non-violence. He eloquently and powerfully advanced the use of literature and effective community organisation as tools of conflict resolution. He and  his colleagues paid for their effectiveness with their lives. Andthe situation in the delta has – appallingly – worsened since Ken’s death.

Our project, “Remember Saro-Wiwa” was established in 2004 to highlight the immediacy of the situation in the delta. The means to do this is through the production of two mobile pieces of public art commissioned for – the Living Memorials. We are backed by the GLA, the Arts Council and individuals and groups committed to non-violent direct action in the delta.

The stirring creations of two distinguished artists, Solari Douglas Camp and Siraj Izhar, these “Living Memorials” will be strategically positioned in very high profile locations in and around and nationally, to communicate the complacency about human rights and environmental abuse that results from our consumption of oil. These works will be supported by a pioneering education and awareness programme for schools and the general public.

Thanks largely to the generous donations of our supporters, our project is now seen as a central resource for people working on Niger delta issues and you may have seen that our work has received extensive national and international media coverage.

The Remember Saro-Wiwa project relies heavily on voluntary donations from supporters who care deeply about our work. We are currently seeking gifts to help us in our new exciting phase – to produce and launch the Battle Bus, the first of the Living Memorials along with the ground-breaking public education programme by Ken’s 11th memorial anniversary in November, 2006.  The Battle Bus, launched in association with Media Partner The Guardian, will make a big cultural and political impact when it starts its tour in November.

You can help us realise this exciting project. We would like you to join our community of supporters, and help create the Living Memorials which will serve to constantly remind us of the links between ethics, art and political change, and inspire us to action.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure, and if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please support the Remember Saro-Wiwa campaign, and join us in remembering the past, and shaping the future.

Many thanks.
