Restoring Polesden Lacey's Steinway Piano · 1 April 2019

We're a charity that looks after special places throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland for ever, for everyone. This includes 780 miles of coastline, over 248,000 hectares of land and over 500 historic houses, castles, ancient monuments gardens and parks and nature reserves.

Story

No expense was spared when it came to the décor at Polesden Lacey. Music lovers maintain that the Steinway & Sons grand piano in the Gold Saloon was the jewel in the crown.

The current 1904 Steinway Model B piano was generously donated by Denis Walker, a long-standing Polesden Lacey volunteer. It’s part of the life and soul of Polesden, enjoyed by many thousands of visitors each year and played by fabulous volunteer pianists.

Sadly, it’s now in need of some TLC. We’re raising money to restore the Steinway to its former glory. This involves replacing the soundboard, hammer, damper and keyboard mechanisms and the cast iron plate. We’re even conserving the original ivory keys and restringing.

Help us keep Polesden Lacey’s piano in fine fettle.
