Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. The 2021 Isle of Man Student Constables want to raise funds for Alder Hey Hospital. It was something that came about because so many people had been touched by the work that they do.

To raise money we are cycling the distance from Isle of Man Police Headquarters to Alder Hey Hospital and back again, a distance of 283km. We will be doing this on 11th July on the outside track of the NSC.

Below we have some stories from officers and family with direct experience, which just shows how much impact the cause has had on so many people:

"My own experience at Alder Hey was when my daughter Iselin (7yrs at the time) was rushed over there by air ambulance, and her treatment continues. We have been met with nothing but kindness and understanding and knowledge – towards my husband and myself as well as to Iselin, when all of us were traumatised. And necessary follow-up phone calls from specialists, being here on Island, have been thorough, informative and attentive.

A word from Iselin (now 11yrs old): “Alder Hey saved my life and they will carry on saving lives”

I would wholeheartedly like to recommend Alder Hey Children’s Charity as a very deserving cause. Funds raised go towards life-saving medical research into childhood conditions, and the hospital treats over 900 children every day. During the current pandemic they have not been able to hold their usual fundraising events while at the same time also setting up a very necessary new Mental Health Unit.

Funds are seriously needed by Alder Hey to carry on their exceptional work." - Katrina Keeling

"My son Jack was 12 months old when he woke up one night displaying symptoms of a severe asthma attack. My wife Donna and I were really scared and we called MEDS, and then ended up taking him to Nobles A&E late that night. Jack was really poorly and struggling to breathe, despite the efforts of everyone on the Children’s Ward where he was admitted. In the early hours of the following day, his condition was so bad that we nearly lost him. A South African consultant called William came on duty that morning took one look at Jack and made the decision to transfer him right then to Alder Hey. That decision saved Jack’s life.

Jack was put onto a life support machine and into an induced coma for the air transport to Liverpool. Donna and I followed what seemed like hours and hours later on a flight out of Ronaldsway, we were naturally massively worried, and barely spoke the whole time.

At Alder hey, the diagnosis for Jack was that he had caught a virus which had affected his breathing, and then was attacked by another virus at the same time which effectively started to shut down his lungs. Alder Hey were absolutely brilliant, everyone working at the hospital should be paid the same as Premier League footballers, more in fact. They nursed Jack back to health over the next week displaying ridiculous amount of care, the level of which was just mind-blowing, and they also made sure to look after Donna and me as well.

Anything we can raise to help Alder Hey, or the people that work there will be more than worthwhile because in my opinion, those people are the true interpretation of the title ‘hero’.

Jack made a full recovery; he’s now nine, going on 25." - Steven Brown

"Alder Hey is an amazing hospital and I will forever be grateful to them. If it wasn’t for Alder Hey I wouldn’t have got to watch my son grow for 6 months. All the teams at Alder Hey are amazing and will do anything to give you and your family support and the medical needs you require. They are so friendly and caring. They will always be hero’s to me and my family." -  a daughter of a serving Police Officer

Anything that you can donate to this amazing cause would be greatly appreciated!
