The 21st of October marks the 10 year anniversary of my beloved brother Rupert's passing aged 31, 22 months after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Rupert was so gracious and accepting during his treatment and ultimately his passing. He was quite simply, a remarkable and selfless human being. I had the honour of caring for Rupert in his final months, and was privileged to be with him when he passed away. He is spoken about and missed everyday.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Over 12,000 people are diagnosed each year with a primary brain tumour, including 500 children and young people – that's 33 people every day. Tragically, over 5,300 people lose their lives to a brain tumour each year and at least 88,000 children and adults are estimated to be living with a brain tumour in the UK currently. Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the management and treatment of brain tumours. Over £700m is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 3% is spent on brain tumours.
During the month of October I will be running 100km in memory of my beautiful brother and for all those affected by this awful disease. I currently only run twice a week so will be stepping this up to 4 times. With being back in the office and Otto starting school, this is going to be a personal challenge for me.
