Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Poppy. I am 5 years old and registered sight impaired, as well as being born with only half a working heart. I want to raise money for the Nystagmus Network to say 'thank you' to them for working so hard to increase understanding of my main eye condition and fund research to find effective treatments for children and adults like me.

Nystagmus is neither well known nor well understood, but is the most common form of visual impairment among children. It is currently incurable. You might notice that my eyes 'wobble' from side to side a lot; it's a bit like shaking a camera when you take a photo. I need a digital magnifier or tablet to read my school books, easily lose my balance, struggle to recognise faces and will never drive a car. Nystagmus makes everyday experiences both challenging and scary.

I'm really excited to be part of the national Nystagmus Network Big Swim. On Saturday 4th November, I will try to achieve my Puffin Award for swimming 5 metres with a float. This may sound a tiny achievement, but it will be huge for me. I have been working towards this for 6 months with my (very patient!) swimming teacher.
