Story
Portree Lifeboat MayDay Mega Mile(s)
Normally at this time of year you would see our intrepid band of walkers (namely the Fundraisers, Crew and friends) setting off from Sligachan to walk the miles to Portree, shaking their donation buckets along the way. But with the current situation we are in, the Fundraisers and Crew had to put their thinking caps on and the MayDay Mega Mile(s) was born.
2021 is the year that will see our Fundraisers, Crew and friends walk, run, cycle, swim or paddle their way to a total of 1416 miles in the month of May.
Why 1416, you say? Well, that would be the number of our boat, Stanley Watson Barker, 14-16. The “14” denotes the class of lifeboat (Trent class) and the “16” is the number of boat - so Stanley Watson Barker was the 16th Trent class boat operational for the RNLI.
A mayday call is the most urgent plea RNLI lifesavers receive, and is used when life is in immediate danger. Usually our lifesavers answer calls for help. But today, with summer on the way, it's they who need YOUR help. We’re expecting more families than ever to book holidays in the UK and Ireland this year. People are excited to get away and thats how it should be. But its so easy to get into trouble by the water, for walkers to get cut off by the tide, for a paddling child to be swept out to sea. We’re raising funds to keep brave lifesavers kitted and trained to deal with these emergencies and come home safe themselves. Will you join in and help make sure the memories we make this summer are precious ones?
