An Andean Journey for Casa Mantay · 1 May 2020

LAFF gives children and organisations in Peru the tools and skills they need to build a more independent future. We provide education and vocational training for at-risk young people. We also support homes to be more sustainable with income-generation, cost reduction and capacity building.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.  We hope that you have enjoyed coming with us on our journey through the Andes, while listening to Will's evocative music.                                                       https://youtu.be/sIKLPbKwOhk

We want to do something to help keep Casa Mantay open and to prevent the young mothers and their children from becoming homeless during this current crisis.

Casa Mantay is in danger of having to close as a result of Covid19.  Much of their normal funding has dried up and the cost of food and basic necessities has rocketed. In addition, their artisan workshop where the young mothers train and work has had to close in the lock-down.  Sales of their high quality leather goods depend on tourism and there are no tourists now in Cusco.

Casa Mantay is a magical place which offers a safe haven and refuge to adolescent mothers and their babies, many of whom have suffered abuse and rejection by their communities.  Casa Mantay gives the young mums a chance to complete their education and learn a skill, whilst supporting them in caring for their children. Some of the mums are as young as 12, becoming pregnant as a result of being raped in their own homes.  If Casa Mantay closes they would have nowhere else to go, or would be faced with the unthinkable: having to return with their babies to those situations of abuse.

LAFF supports Casa Mantay and is working hard to secure on-going funding, but the immediate need is for funds to cover the expenses over the coming few months.

We have supported LAFF since 2007 and recognise the wonderful work they do to give disadvantaged young people in Peru the chance to build a brighter future. In 2011 Mary visited Casa Mantay with our daughter Fran, who was working for LAFF at the time. It made a lasting impression on her.

It costs £5,676 to keep Casa Mantay open for a month. We know that there are many requests for donations by charities at this time, but anything you can spare will help.

We hope that you and your family keep safe and well in this challenging time.

Thank you

Chris and Mary
