Meet Precious and her four beautiful kittens. Precious came
into our care here at Bridgend when she was noticed by local people as a stray. We appealed for owners but nobody came forward so we made her comfortable ready for the arrival of her kittens as she was already very pregnant when she came to us. We think she is about three years old, but is a very small girl.

She had been with us just over three weeks when she went into labour. She managed to deliver three lovely kittens naturally but then started to struggle. Our amazing team here got her to the vets so they could help her with the delivery. It was quickly decided that a caesarean would be the safest option for her and the unborn kittens. She delivered two further kittens, but unfortunately one had already died in the womb. The four healthy kittens were returned to Precious so they could feed and gain all the amazing nutrients they needed from mum.

She’s been a fantastic mum so far, but hasn’t had the easiest start as she has already been treated for an infection, so we needed vet nurses to support the kittens for a short period while she recovered. The kittens are now back with her and they are all thriving.

Thanks to our Facebook supporters we have names for all her kittens, meet – Onyx, Ruby, Sapphire and Topaz.

We see many cats like Precious each year and this winter we want to share her story to show how important those first eight precious weeks with mum are. We are asking for your help, to help spread the word about kittens staying with mum for the first eight weeks and to help support our appeal to care for them until they are ready to be homed.

The kind of costs involved in looking after a mother and
kittens are food, vaccinations, neutering (when they are old enough) and in Precious’ case surgery and antibiotics.
