High in the remote mountains of Pakistan, working donkeys will travel miles a day, carrying huge quantities of coal up and down mine shafts.

The work is hard for both humans and animals – and the shifts are long and dangerous. Often animals will go for hours without water, as such a resource is scarce. There can be water shortages because of road and weather conditions, which means donkeys can become severely dehydrated or sick from drinking polluted water in desperation.

The donkeys’ owners often also work on the mistaken belief that giving their animals plenty of water makes them bloated and unable to work properly. Assumptions like these have often been passed down through the generations and can be very difficult to shift.

By supporting Project Coal, you could help Brooke to work with mining communities, so they can pool together funds and install drinking troughs, which helps their animals access clean water. It could also help us to work with members of coal mining communities to change long-held beliefs about donkeys having too much to drink. This helps them ensure their animals have enough water to keep them hydrated and healthy.
