In 2022, a group of friends are taking on a summer challenge to cycle the length of Ireland in 7 days, beginning at Mizen head, Cork and finishing at Malin head, Donegal.

We will be training throughout the year, sharing our progress, and will be fundraising for the fantastic Air Ambulance NI service (AANI). 

This will a huge challenge for us all, as amateur cyclists. The work required will however pale in comparison to that done by the Air Ambulance in Northern Ireland. 

We have seen firsthand the importance and impact of this work. 

AANI work with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) to provide the  Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). In essence, they provide a 365-day-a-year service, providing high quality pre-hospital emergency care, and can access any location in the region within 30 minutes. They attend traumatic/emergent situations and greatly improve chance of patient survival by enabling rapid transport to hospital-based trauma services. By the beginning of 2022, they have completed over 2600 operations since 2017. 

Therefore, for anyone engaging in any outdoor/sporting activity in Northern Ireland, from cyclists to hikers, the AANI could make the difference in terms of survival. 

AANI is however a charity, relying on donations from the general public to maintain this vital service. Annual operations cost in the region of £2 million to maintain.
