Hi! We are two working mums who (over a glass or two of Prosecco) decided to enter our very first half marathon. We decided on the iconic London Royal Parks half marathon, on 12 October 2014. Whilst achieving our own personal goals is important, our main aim is to raise as much money for Cancer Research as is possible - our target being £1,000. Our lives have both been impacted by cancer, our individual stories are below....
Lisa
When my father in law died very tragically from asbestosis in 2004 my own father was in shock, 6 months later he was fighting his own battle with cancer and died within weeks. Having already lost my uncle Alfie to cancer I decided take up running to raise money for research. I took part in a couple of five and ten k races but swore I would never run further! Being vertically challenged (short) running isn't something that comes naturally, my little legs need to take twice as many steps as most!! However last year I lost a school friend to breast cancer and my dearest friend Sara was diagnosed. She bravely battled and beat the disease and I wanted to do something that was challenging and way outside my comfort zone to raise as much money as possible. Having Angie to spur me on has helped no end but training is tough - I cried after my first ten mile run my legs hurt so much!! However it's getting easier and I am confident I will not only compete the run, I'm hoping for a respectable time!!
Angie
Like so many people, my life has been affected by cancer and its devastating effects. I've lost both of my Grandfathers and step-Grandfather to cancer and watched other close family members battle the disease. I've also witnessed Sara's brave fight against breast cancer.
My job as a nurse brings me into regular contact with people and their families affected by cancer and I am constantly reminded what a cruel and indiscriminate disease it is.
I have been keen to run a half marathon for some time, so when Lisa and I discussed it (over that glass of wine!) I knew that now was the right time. If we can raise money for a cause that is close to both our hearts, at the same time as achieving a fantastic personal goal, then that would make all the hours of training more than worthwhile.
When you're a working Mum, it isn't always easy trying to fit the training runs in. However, Lisa and I inspire each other and I was SO happy when we recently ran 11 miles together!! Together, Lisa and I have shared laughter and pain and I know that there's more of the same to come!
But equally, I cannot wait to cross the finish line and the £1,000 fundraising goal we have set.
Please give generously - together we can make a difference.
