Story
The Neonatal Unit at Heartlands Hospital treats over 1,000 premature babies every year, together with their partner Special Care Baby Unit site at Good Hope Hospital.
Heartlands Hospital treats babies who have been born from 23 weeks right up to full term babies who are born unwell. For the babies who are born extremely prematurely, they will need specialist support as their organs and even skin may not have developed and so they need round the clock care from our team of Doctors and Neonatal Nurses.
Many babies and their families will spend weeks and even months on the unit and the team also support new mums with breastfeeding and both parents with holding, changing and feeding their child so that they can feel a part of the process from the beginning.
Heartlands Hospital Charity supports the Neonatal Unit by providing things that are over and above what the NHS can provide. This includes things such as breast pumps that are adapted for tiny babies, recliner chairs to help parents with skin to skin contact and we are currently fundraising for state of the art incubators that can help babies survive outside of the womb. These incubators will provide the premature babies with the right environmental conditions that they need to thrive and develop and go on to have successful outcomes in life.
