Story

Enjoy the gift of (armchair) travel to help those most impacted by the coronavirus. Donate to The National Emergencies Trust to receive your digital copy of The Pothole travel book.

The Pothole

The Pothole is a book of travel stories from writers, conservationists and travellers, young and old, on how travel brings us together. The bumpy beauty of travel as we like to call it. But at a time when none of us can travel, when we all have to keep our distance, it's the personal stories which stand out most: navigating a landslide with the help of a gaucho; seeing Costa Rica through the eyes of 11 year olds; the inside story of the largest private land donation in history.

We hope the book allows you to escape into the bumpy beauty of travel whilst we are on lockdown. But more than that, we want to do our bit, however small, to help communities and individuals made most vulnerable by the coronavirus outbreak. So if you would like to receive your digital version of The Pothole, we just ask for a small donation to The National Emergencies Trust.

If you'd like to see a table of contents and a have a peek at a couple of pages from the book, please click the Gallery at the top of this page.

About the National Emergencies Trust

The NET was created following the awful tragedy of Grenfell and the terror attacks in 2017 in London and Manchester. The funds raised by their coronavirus appeal, launched by HRH Duke of Cambridge, will go directly to local charities and grassroots organisations that can provide vital support to people in the quickest way possible. So far over £25 million has been raised. More will be needed.

How it works

1. To receive a digital copy of The Pothole please make a donation (suggested £5) to The National Emergencies Trust (NET) using the Donate button above and clicking or typing in your chosen amount into the box. Every penny of your donation will go directly to the NET. The book is not available to buy anywhere else. You will also be asked if you wish to make a donation to Just Giving, who are not charging a fee to the NET for this page. This is entirely optional.

2. In your confirmation email you will receive a link to download your book. The book is in PDF format so that it can be read on any device, be it tablet, desktop or mobile. This also means no cost of sale is involved and so 100% of the money will go directly to the appeal. Please note that there may be a slight delay in your email coming through - Just Giving are experiencing high demand at the moment.

3. If you would like to gift a copy of The Pothole to a friend or family member, simply forward them the link so that they can download it directly.
