1000 mile challenge

This July the staff of the Portsmouth Children’s Emergency Department have pledged to complete a 1000 mile challenge in an effort to raise money for the department.

Between them they will cover at least 1000 miles of socially distanced activities. These will range from walking to running, swimming, cycling or horse riding. (There has even been mention of a pogo stick and sprung stilts!) We have based our mileage on a trip from John o Groats to Lands End with a few theme park visits on the way down including Alton Towers, Legoland and Peppa Pig World.

The Children’s emergency department hosts regular fundraising events, the proceeds of which are filtered back into the department to benefit the families we care for. In recent years these have contributed to toys, books, distraction equipment for procedures and an interactive floor. Charitable funds have also allowed us to purchase equipment, books and toys to help with the early child bereavement support.

We are a busy department and saw over 25,000 children last year. We pride ourselves on providing high quality care whilst minimising distress and anxiety in what can be an otherwise scary trip for children to the hospital.
