Race to the Stones 2023 · 8 July 2023 to 9 July 2023 ·

Make 2nds Count is dedicated to making people living with secondary breast cancer count. We do this by raising funds to support specialist research into secondary breast cancer, extending and improving the quality of life for patients battling against this treatable yet incurable disease.

Story

Back in September, Chris sent me a note asking if I fancied doing something together besides work - Tim, Chris and I all work together at Keyloop (www.keyloop.com). That was the beginning of what turned into the three of us agreeing to take on Race to the Stones - a 100km ultramarathon from Oxfordshire to Avebury, Wiltshire.

In doing so we are raising money for Make 2nds Count - a charity dedicated to supporting people with secondary breast cancer.

Secondary breast cancer is breast cancer which has spread from the breast to other parts of the body. Although secondary breast cancer can be treated, there is no cure. Unlike those living with primary breast cancer, there is no end of treatment, there is no remission. It’s estimated that 35,000 people are currently living with secondary breast cancer in the UK yet only 7% of the National funding for cancer goes towards this incurable disease. Make 2nds Count aim to address this imbalance.

My wife Gemma (@gemduff) was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in 2019, aged 36, following what we thought was a private appointment just for peace of mind. Our children were 6 and 3 at the time.  Since then I have had a front row seat of courage, determination and an unwavering conviction to make the most out of life's opportunities. Gemma has herself raised over £20k for various breast cancer charities.

It has been, and continues to be, extremely tough. Gem's resilience and energy are, as always, infectious. The training has not quite gone according to plan - I suspect I will end up walking more than running and waving the lads off at the start. But, whatever, I will complete the challenge.

Any support you're able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Craig
