The Grand Appeal is the Bristol Children's Hospital Charity, transforming the lives of sick children from Bristol, the South West and beyond. Help save the lives of sick children, provide pioneering medical equipment and keep families together by donating or fundraising for The Grand Appeal.

Story

2018 has been a tough year for us in school. Two members of our staff have been affected by their children being diagnosed with the need to have major surgery due to congenital conditions.

Unexpectedly in June of 2018,  Beth and Jason's son was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and then given the devastating news  that he would need a kidney transplant.  The specialist centre in Bristol Children's Hospital catered for Tom's immeadiate needs and it is there that he will undergo his transplant in 2019.

In December 2018, Rach and Gwion's son Ioan underwent major open heart surgery, a complicated and long procedure that repaired his aortic valve and will allow him to function as a normal teenager.  He is now recovering at home and making good progress.

The Grand Appeal is a fantastic charity, particularly in it's support of parents whose children are critically ill. One of the many ways they help is to provide free accommodation for parents in their time of need.  Both the Hunt and Kennard family experienced the need for this invaluable service, staying in ensuite, clean and comfortable rooms, a short walk from their child's bedside.

We'd like to do our bit to make sure that when other families are faced with the trauma of dealing with the illness of their child, The Grand Appeal will be there to prop them up and give them one less thing to worry about.

Our plan is to cycle from Bideford to Cardiff, over the course of three days. About 70 'undulating' miles a day. We will be following the Lands End to John O Groats route until we reach the old Severn Bridge, before following the coast back to school. This will not be an easy challenge but one that we're prepared to do for such a worthwhile cause.

Any donation, big or small will be gratefully received.
