Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page ❤️

Our start to the year began with a tragic accident, where Dale was hit by a car on a morning jog. Dale obtained a long list of injuries, most of which have thankfully now healed. However one of the nine breaks to his back caused damage to his spinal cord, leaving him with a permanent spinal cord injury (SCI).

We have learnt a lot about SCIs this year but everyday can bring new challenges and a change in Dale's health and wellbeing. We have utilised the support of a few SCI focused charities but I chose to fundraise for BackUp specifically as they have personally helped provide Dale's family and I with mentors to help us through our questions and daily challenges.

BackUp carefully pair the mentors/mentees so that they are as closely as possible, understand the struggles the mentee is facing. I was paired with a lovely lady called Kate, whose husband had a similar injury level to Dale. Her stories of her husband's para-skiing and adaptive sport charity days gave me and Dale hope and excitement for our future, the future that we are having to re-write since his accident.

Dale is for the most part doing incredibly well. He has big ambitions, which has motivated me to join in and set some challenges for myself.

Dale is annoyingly athletic and without much effort can often beat me at pretty much any sport. So taking the opportunity of Dale unlikely to run a 10 mile race again, I'm attempting to beat his 2019 Great South Run time 😅. Thankfully for me he had a few too many beers over the weeks before so it's a half effort time of 1hr 24 mins.

To put this into perspective I've run the GSR 3X and my best time is about 1hr 48mins, so this is going to be tough! To make the race day even more special Dale is planning to race as well using his chair and Dale's Dad and Wife are joining in too. #TeamMuff
