Story

Hello everyone:) you all know I'm a bit crazy but I'm a right wimp & a big girl too!

I'm going to be doing a SOLO skydive for charity (on the weekend of the 5th of March, 2011) I've never done anything like this before & I'm not daring at all, or in to extreme sports! so I'm very excited but sooooooo scared too. I actually get travel sick very easily! so I think I've lost the plot booking this!

I'm not even doing the slightly less scary option by diving in tandem. I'm skydiving for the first time solo & doing a static jump! Yikes!

I got the skydive booked as a Christmas present from Matt (so everything is paid for) that way every penny donated goes straight to the charity.

The charity I've chosen is Skcin (www.skcin.org) The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity.

This a great charity that supports skin cancer. This charity is very personal to me as I've recently had a skin cancer scare myself & had a couple of mole excisions after they suspected them to be possible malignant melanomas. The whole thing was quite traumatic, unexpected & rushed but I've been very lucky & everything was fine! So I'm very grateful as I have so many moles... But at least now really understand the importance of regular checks & staying safe in the sun & will monitor things a lot more. I want to help raise awareness as so many people die from this type of skin cancer every year & more often than not if the mole was spotted & simply removed early on it would save so many lives. So this is why I want to support the charity & their brilliant work.

Here's a bit more information about the work the charity & the work they do:

1. Raising the profile of skin cancer targeting "at risk" groups both at work and at leisure.

2. Creating awareness in respect of the signs and symptoms of the disease thereby encouraging individuals to seek medical attention leading to vital early detection.

3. Providing funds for equipment with which to improve treatment of the disease and for creating a more welcoming environment for patients.

Karen Clifford passed away on New Year's Eve 2005 after a courageous battle against skin Cancer. Since the disease was diagnosed, her family were dismayed to discover that while a few specialist organisations existed, there were in fact no specific all encompassing organisations with national aspirations.

Whilst recognising the existence of the excellent annual Cancer Research UK "Sunsmart" campaign and the work undertaken by other skin cancer organisations in other parts of the UK, we firmly believe that skin cancer requires a continuous onging national campaign resulting in a significantly higher profile for the disease targetting all age groups at home and abroad at work and at play.

Together with medical professionals at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, the family and friends have set out to establish what is hoped to be the first high profile charitable organisation targeting this specific form of cancer in the UK. The principle objective of the charity is to ensure that the danger of over-exposure to the sun is given greater profile with the emphasis on education resulting in the vital early detection of the disease.
