Story
Phil and I have decided to run the Great North Run this year and raise money for a charity close to our hearts! JDRF - The Type 1 Diabetes Charity.
In July 2020 at the age of 7, my daughter Alice, (pictured with some of the kit needed to keep her alive) Phil's Step-daughter, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This unfortunately runs in my family, my mum and Grandad also suffer from the condition.
Alice will require insulin for the rest of her life. She is lucky enough to have an Insulin Pump which feeds her insulin through a canular, she has to change this every 3 days. Alice also wears a Libre scanner which is a needle that sits under her skin, this records her blood sugar level continuously, however, like all technology this is prone to inaccuracy and failure so Alice regularly has to test her blood sugar level with her finger pricker!
All of Alice's meals require Carbohydrate calculations to maintain a stable blood sugar level. Too little insulin can cause hyperglycaemia - if this is prolonged, it could have a catastrophic effect on her health in the future. If Alice has too much Insulin and is hypoglycaemic, she could become unconscious and even go into a Coma.
Finding a cure for this life changing disease is essential so please help us support this incredible charity.
