Story

THANKYOU FOR VISITING MY PAGE!!

Every little helps :D I have worked hard to get this far with fundraising since January - please help me finish!

My name is Rachel Young, I am an upper sixth student at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, and have just sat my A level exams in Chemistry, Biology and English Literature. In seven weeks I will be going to work in a Peruvian orphanage in a slum town on the outskirts of Lima, called Ventanilla, with Project Trust (a registered educational charity) to teach and care for children between the ages of 0 and 17. Comunidad de Ninos sagrada Familia is one of the largest orphanages in Peru, home to over 400 children who have either been abandoned or orphaned in life. They have fairly recently built a medical clinic, baby unit, and on-site school to cope with numbers.

My role in the orphanage will be to teach English and Science on a range of different levels and work at the weekends in the medical centre (I am studying Medicine at University when I return). I will also be heavily involved with my English partner volunteer in running extracurricular activities for the children in sport, art and music, all on limited resources.

For further information, here are a few links about the place I'm going:

(In Spanish but they have some pictures.)

(English, directory-type profile of the place.)

( ...the place has got a YouTube video!)

I intend to go for an entire academic year, from late August to September. This is so I can immerse myself in the culture, form relationships and bonds with the children, and really try and impact the area I am working.

To find out more about Project Trust and what I will be doing visit www.projecttrust.org.uk/

So far I have done bag-packing at Waitrose, numerous cake sales at school, organised a Carnival Themed day at college, completed 2 sponsored events  (a Cambridge - London bikeride and Scafell Pike climb) I also ran the cloakroom at a school ball for the younger L6th year and have written to a lot of charitable trusts and businesses - all while sitting A-levels! The total at the top is where my efforts have resulted so far.

One last website (sorry! If you only look at one look at this one) is my blog that I am using to keep in touch with the UK when I'm out in South America. I have kept it since January 2010 so it has a record of my fundraising efforts thus far.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I really appreciate your time and interest - this opportunity will open my eyes and be such a learning curve I cannot imagine. I will gain in maturity and independence, having never travelled beyond Spain I really look forward to exploring the world, as well as making a difference at the same time. I will also be able to build upon my AS Spanish skills.
