Great Manchester Run 10k 2021 · 26 September 2021 ·

National Ugly Mugs is a reporting mechanism for sex workers who are often targeted by dangerous individuals. NUM issues alerts to sex workers & feeds intelligence to police, aiming to reduce the offending career of some of the most dangerous serial sexual offenders who pose a threat to us all.

Story

So, that time of year when training becomes more of a focus
for the brilliant Great Manchester Run in May. I will be running 10K again this year on Sunday 24th May with the Purple Wave raising money for NUM (National Ugly Mugs) who are ending violence again sex workers in the UK. They aim to:

  • To improve the safety of sex workers
  • To prevent crime
  • To bring to justice more offenders who target sex workers.
  • To support sex workers in accessing frontline services
  • To increase the number of crimes against sex workers reported to the police
  • To enhance the levels of intelligence that exist throughout the UK about dangerous criminals

(National Ugly Mugs 2020)

This charity means a lot to me as I believe no one should face abuse, threat or complete authoritarian ignorance when their livelihood depends on their work. There is not enough protection and support for voices. NUM provides information to sex workers where possible about any potential dangers or threats that could cause harm as well as providing a voice for justice. Not only is the purpose of this to raise money, but it’s to raise awareness to the public about the rights of sex workers in the UK and break the stigma and silence of those who don’t feel like they can speak up (and what better way to do it that than putting this on social media and running past thousands of people in Manchester displaying the charity name?!).
