Mount Snowdon · 17 April 2023

1 in 100 people have coeliac disease, yet only 36% are diagnosed. Coeliac UK empowers everyone affected, breaking down barriers, improving everyday life, offering trusted support and advancing research towards a cure. And we do it all so that one day, no one’s life will be limited by gluten.

Story

In April of this year, our newly turned 8 year old daughter Raine, will be taking on the 1,085 metres to the summit of Snowdon alongside both parents and grandparents!

She will be doing this to raise money and awareness for Coeliac UK.

In September of last year Raine was diagnosed with Coeliac disease which means she will endure a strict lifelong diet without gluten. Imagine always having to search for an alternative from your usual bread, pizza, pasta etc and always being limited to the ONLY thing on the menu which is gluten free when out.

For anyone to receive this diagnosis is hard, but for a 7 year old (who LOVES lemon cake!) even harder. Despite having the odd moment she has taken the news incredibly well and changed her diet accordingly.

For those who don't know, Coeliac disease is not an allergy or an intolerance, it is an auto immune disease that causes the body to attack itself when gluten is eaten and this causes damage in the small intestine. It cannot be treated with medicine but with a strict and for some very restrictive diet. If a strict gluten free diet is not followed, Raine and others with coeliac, face complications later on in life with an increased risk of diabetes, infertility, miscarriage & osteoporosis to name a few. This is reduced to that of a healthy individual if the diet is followed.

Thankfully Raine was not entirely unaware of the restrictions of a gluten free diet as her nana is also a coeliac and so she feels she has a "gf twin".....they also look the same with their big blonde curly locks!

Coeliac UK are an independent national charity with no government support, trying to make things easier for about 500,000 people living with the condition, by funding vital research to manage the impacts of gluten and making better gluten free food more accessible to all.

We would be grateful for anyone who can spare a little change, so we can make a big change to those affected.

Thanks mum, dad & Raine! x
