Story

We're nearing World Down syndrome Day on 21st March!

And firstly, in the lead up to this, we want to say how stoked we are to have family, friends, and a community of people around us that have been nothing but positive, accepting, and inclusive since we received Reid's birth diagnosis over 2 years ago.

And secondly, what a perfect time it is then to shout the worth of Reid and everyone like him. It wouldn't be true to say that life hasn't bought us it's challenges at times over the last couple of years, but the love, pride, and joy we experience by having Reid in our lives outweighs this immeasurably.

This is the Reid we want the world to see - not the diagnosis. We wish for him to be embraced for who he is, and celebrated for his differences, not in spite of them.

Everyone wants to feel a sense of connection. To feel that they fit in, to feel safe, valued, have great friends, and to feel loved. People with Down Syndrome are no different.

For many parents receiving the diagnosis that their child has Down syndrome is a time of great uncertainty - and many worry about what the future will hold for their child, and their family on this unexpected path. Auckland Down Syndrome Association provides support and guidance along this wonderful (but sometimes turbulent!) journey and creates great connection points for families at any stage of life.

The ADSA provide visits to new parents in hospital and coffee groups for carers of littlies, primary school age playdates, education courses for schools, and social clubs for our teenagers and adults. They have an extensive resource library that helps parents and schools with information specific to Down syndrome. Families like ours greatly value the sense of community and knowing that we are not alone.

Your support, financial or otherwise, of our family and of the ADSA is genuinely and humbly appreciated and we thank you deeply.
