Hey guys! Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online for my well worthy trip to Kenya. In case you're not quite sure what I'm fundrasing for, here is a spiel about the charity and what we will do with the money.
Kenya Education Partnerships (KEP for short) is an Oxbridge based charity that aims to invest in rural Kenyan schools desperately in need of funding. The main buzz word is SUSTAINABILITY, as we believe that a simple donation to the schools in question is not the way to go about tackling this massive lack of resources. The education system in Kenya differs vastly from that in the UK, with many schools suffering from a lack of government teachers. With many children living up to 10 miles walk from their nearest school, attendancies vary, and classes are often empty after lunch, with kids failing to return. Head teachers often have to employ local teachers and pay them upfront. Fees come in drips and drabs from the students, many of whose families are too poor to fund their childrens education, thus fees can be paid in rice and other commodities. It is thus easy to appreciate why our help is needed, and why it is so important that we help the schools to develop in a sustainable manner so that they can run themselves after a minimum two years of investment. We dont want to have to go back to the school every year with more money if the school is not benefiting from our help, thus every year, we access their progress, and look at new ways in which we can help them.
The money we raise, £1500 per school, will be allocated by my partner and I, in close conjunction with the existing teachers into areas which need it most. We work in 10 schools in the area of Kisii, some of which will be schools already in the program, and others starting new. The investment in each school will be very different, whether it be science equipment, maths textbooks, novels etc,
and its our responsibility to make sure that the money is used effectively.
I know I'm aiming to raise £2000 pounds, so you're probably wondering where the rest of the money goes? Well if we cant get out to Kenya, we can't do our job, so the money we raise encompasses the whole cost of the trip, including flights, food, and vaccinations etc. I know it seems like I'm raising money to have a summer abroad and have lots and lots of fun, and thats pretty damn true, but at the same time, the time that I will invest there, will be invaluable to the community of Kisii.
OK so enough about KEP, and more about the MOUSTACHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well it all started off a year ago when our College Charities Rep Oly Carr wanted us to grow moustaches for the month of November (MOvember) to raise money for Emilies Charities, but only I was up for it and it fell through. But this year round, I had a personal connection to a specific charity, with a mountain of fundrasing to do. So I decided why not look like an absolute twazer for never mind just one month, but the whole time between November and the day of departure, thats 8 MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Doesn't help of course when not only all my friends rip into me everytime they see me, my family give me abuse left right and centre too. But none the less, the tach is here to stay and every time u see me, you're just gonna want to give me money! The way its working at the moment is that people are sponsoring me for a day in the calendar between 1st Nov and 28th June, with one day costing £2. So you can sponsor me for as few or as many days as you like. I think the days are soon going to run out, so if you feel like just giving me a donation then thats cool as well. However much you feel comfortable with, but the more the better.
I'm also going to be running the Reading Half Marathon in Easter, hopefully in costume, but I'll keep you all posted wih my choice of safari animal, whether it be hippo, giraffe or elephant. But in the mean while, please sponsor me on line. I know I'm not going till June next year, but if dont get the money now, then I'm going to panic nearer the time. So feel generous and support a well worthy cause. Even more, any money given online is gift-aidable, which means we get to do the government over at the same time!!!
Many thanks for your support.
Groucho!
