Staff, students and alumni are fundraising in support of the Sanctuary Scholarships. This will help remove barriers faced by students seeking asylum in the UK, providing them the opportunity to transform their lives through education.

Story

#Team Hallam are running the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday 29 March to raise money for the Sanctuary Scholarships as part of the Hallam Fund. The Sanctuary Scholarships recognise the determination, aspirations and resilience of asylum seeking students, and their academic abilities and potential to succeed. Consisting of a full tuition fee waiver, an annual maintenance grant of £4000, and a bespoke package of tailored support, the scholarships aim to remove the barriers facing asylum seeking students, so they have a real opportunity to make the most of what university can offer, regardless of their personal circumstances.

But I am not asking you to do this out of goodwill or altruism. I am asking you to do it out of spite. We live in a time of increasing hostility towards foreigners and vulnerable people and increasing inaccessability of higher education, and in an extremely hilly city. By giving to Sanctuary Scholarships you can cause personal suffering to Katie Hopkins and Nigel Farage, to your anti-immigrant relatives and, most of all, to me. No-one is illegal, jogging is awful.
