Story

Update as at 3 November 2010

Thanks to everyone for making donations / contributions. These are all very much appreciated by both the Charity and me...

Update as at 9 October 2010

As planned The Walk was completed on 7 October after 15 days of walking.

The miles covered were nearer 200 than 191 since we got "slightly lost" on a few occasions and the locations of some of our B&Bs required us to walk additional miles off the route.

A few blisters were "collected" during The Walk but nothing too serious. All three of us completed The Walk.

Overall the weather was ok but we did get soaked on a couple of days even though we were wearing so called waterproofs.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed / made a donation.

I am now in the mood to undertake another long walk......

I have slept in 19 different beds over the last 19 nights and hence I am looking forward to a few nights in my own bed....

B&Bs varied from "very good" to "never again".

Best Wishes, Ralph

Background

Back in December 2009, my friend John James asked me if I wanted to join him with his father-in-law to walk from St Bees Head to Robin Hoods Bay (Wainwright's Coast To Coast Walk). I said that I hadn't got anything planned for Autumn 2010 and so I might as well join them.

191 miles in 15 days sounds straightforward - and it is for three fit young people, however, we are not three fit young people. We may be getting fitter (we have been doing some training over the last few months) but we are not getting any younger. With a combined age of 180 years we are (or should be) responsible mature adults. Also, I understand that there are some hills in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors and hence some of the walking is not on the flat. 191 miles is the total distance, if we don't get lost.

We start the walk on 23 September 2010 and arrive at Robin Hoods Bay (The End...) on 7 October 2010.

The Hertfordshire Charity For Deprived Children is a registered charity and was set up in 1961. Almost 7,000 children have been supported / assisted by the charity to date. I am the Treasurer of the charity and I'd very much appreciate if you could make a donation to this worthy cause.

I stress that all donations go the charity and not in overheads (or to offset my expenses...!).

Thanks very much,

Ralph
