The Wildlife Ranger Challenge
Campaign by Tusk Trust (RCN 1186533)
Wildlife protectors across Africa are uniting to defend decades of conservation progress. Ranger teams spanning the continent are joining forces in the Wildlife Ranger Challenge with one goal to bring thousands of their counterparts back to the field

Story

About the Wildlife Ranger Challenge:

COVID-19 has brought tourism revenue to a halt across Africa, threatening the important work and livelihoods of the rangers who protect iconic African wildlife such as elephants, pangolins, rhinos, lions, and more. Ranger teams are now uniting around the Wildlife Ranger Challenge, a running race with one goal: to raise money to support thousands of their fellow rangers. Now is the time to go the extra mile—it’s time to race to support our rangers. Every dollar donated will be matched by the Scheinberg Relief Fund, doubling your generous contribution.

Your contribution will help support 27 rangers and an estimated 297 livelihoods in and around the Randilen Wildlife Management Area in Tanzania.

The role of rangers:

Randilen Wildlife Management Area is located in a critical migratory corridor of the Tarangire ecosystem, part of the wider northern Tanzania landscape. Rangers are selected from the local area and work on community-owned and managed land, meaning the community themselves have a vested interest in securing the natural resources and habitat. Their work is critical in this objective: protecting rangelands for the community livestock, protecting community crops from elephant raids and protecting wildlife and habitat that in turn bring new economic opportunities to the area.

How your donation will help:

Additional funds would go toward supporting these community-based rangers. While salaries have been secured through March, the more immediate challenge is to enable wildlife protection to continue. This will require funding for food rations, fuel, maintenance of patrol vehicles, informer rewards, and ranger bonuses.

Effects of the pandemic:

The rangers in the areas we work have been able to continue to protect the wildlife and natural resources, we have not seen any changes in the current four-month trend of zero poaching. But, with no tourism revenue, communities have had to postpone all development and investment activities to ensure funding for wildlife protection.
