Story

Going through mental health difficulties myself, I know what a low place this can be. At the end of 2021, I found myself really struggling. The pressures of my job at the time, relationship struggles and the effects of Covid lockdowns left me feeling in emotional turmoil. I remember one night being sat on the side of my bed, crying, thinking things can't go on like this. I was so ashamed of how low I felt, which included suicidal thoughts. I found it difficult to open and talk, fearing judgement and not wanting 'to be a burden'.

Through speaking to friends and family and seeking professional counselling, I finally started to feel more like myself. I’d been a keen runner since I was a teenager, and I decided to run a half marathon in December 2022. The process of setting myself a goal and the training plan I put in place did wonders for my mental health. In the months and weeks leading up to the race I felt inspired, motivated and relished the challenge of trying to run the race in under an hour and a half (my time was 1:25:30).

Physical activity can be such a great way to tackle mental health problems, and all the team at Healthy Minds understand this and do a great job in helping students who are facing mental health difficulties. Healthy Minds was launched in 2016 by the University of Bristol Sport division to aid students with mental health difficulties. It includes sessions with an activity mentor, a tailored activity plan and support for future health maintenance, as well as access to a range of classes, clubs and sporting opportunities. Since 2016, the programme has helped nearly 500 students.

The lessons I've learnt through running have helped deal with the ups and downs of everyday life. I am running this marathon for anybody who has or is facing a difficult time in their life - you are so much stronger than you give yourself credit for.
