Story

As a runstreaker who has been running every day for the last 5 years, I don’t run for races, medals, speeds or distances. I run primarily for my physical and mental well-being. For the joy and privilege of being able to run. For the views and the sunsets and sunrises. For the pleasure of the company of friends but also the peaceful solitude it brings. I do occasionally however like to push myself by taking part in an organised event to help raise funds and awareness for a cause that is very close to my heart.

Samaritans provide a vital service to so many people. They have saved so many lives. Just by being there. Just by listening.

This time last year, I broke. Many will not realise this as I am excellent at hiding my pain, but I fell into the darkest of places. Mentally I really felt utterly done. Many people have since said to me “I wish you’d reached out” “you know I’m just a call away” “I’m here, just let me know if you need me”. But sometimes, when you are in the darkest of black holes, you do not have the mental strength to reach out. You don’t want to be a burden. Toxic thoughts can venture into your mind.

I was lucky. Those around me could see me deteriorating and they have slowly helped me rebuild myself back to the fiery sparky little firecracker that I am. I had ears that wanted to listen. They kept on turning up and being there. They kept on showing up even when I pushed them away.

Not everyone is so lucky.

Not everyone has an ear that is willing to just listen.

Samaritans have a phone line that is available 24/7 and there is always someone to listen. To give you that ear. When you are surrounded by everyone but feel that no one can hear you. That’s when they are there.

I am embarking on a physical challenge that will test my little legs and my strong heart. It will be an emotional run but I’m seeing this as my celebration lap of honour.

The Peak District Ultra is an amazing challenge in the most beautiful of locations. 52k / 32 miles with 1,400 m / 4,593 ft of elevation. Gulp. Have I bitten off more than I chew? Probably. Will that stop me trying? No.

Thankfully I am not running this alone and will be with a small group of equally passionate running friends who are also RunningPunks like me. If we get lost, it’s their fault as I am navigationally challenged even with a map that shows me which way to go! :)

I am raising funds for Samaritans as a way of saying thank you for being there for so many people who struggle every single day. Unfortunately so many lives are lost to suicide because they feel that no one is there. The work they do makes a huge difference. Every. Single. Day.

Please support me if you can.

Much love as always ♥️ xxxxxx
