Story
In August I will be making a solo ascent of Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze.
At a height of 2962 metres (9718 feet) the Zugspitze sits on the border between Germany and Austria. I will be making my climb from the German side beginning in the city of München (Munich.) A two-day trek south through the alpine foothills will see me arrive in the town of Garmish-Partenkirchen and from there begins the ascent proper.
On the first day of the climb I will ascend through the Höllental (Hell's Valley) and reach roughly the half-way point of the climb. After a night on the mountain I will then continue upwards. The second day on the mountain will see me crossing the glacier and scaling the final rock faces before finally reaching the summit. After spending a second night on the peak I will finally make my descent and (hopefully) return to the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the evening.
All in all, this trek will see me cover a distance of 118 kilometres (73 miles) over four or five days (dependent on the weather on the mountain!) starting from one of the lowest elevations in Bavaria and finishing at the very highest.
This will be the highest mountain I have ever tackled with my previous 'conquests' being limited to Sri Pada (2243 metres) and Snowdon (1085 metres.)
