I visited the most remote Maasai villages in Kenya for the second time last October and one day we were taken to one the villages' "well" up the hill. When we arrived, there was still a queue of women (who collect all the water) and livestock, waiting for their turn to scoop up what they could from the 1 square metre of clear water sitting at the edge of an open muddy pond. They had to use a small plastic beaker to fill their plastic jerry cans to avoid muddying the water further. 2,000 men, women and children rely on this water for drinking, cooking and cleaning, every day.

It was not what I had expected - it was not a "well" but a collection of water in the ripples of the muddy ground. 

After taking to the locals, we devised a plan to embed a huge covered plastic tank into the pond, with piped outflows to a separate tank for human consumption and a further tank for animal consumption. All of this would cost just £3,000, with the local men providing the labour to build it.Further pipes could bring the water down to the village, which would require a further £3,000.
