Refugee Biriyani & Bananas

Arthur Wolstenholme is raising money for Refugee Biriyani & Bananas

Refugee Biriyani & Bananas · 27 January 2023

Refugee Biriyani & Bananas (RBB) is a grassroots organisation working alongside displaced communities affected by war, displacement, poverty, and border violence. Founded in 2015, RBB provides emergency aid, community-led support, advocacy, and awareness raising across refugee routes and crisis settings, including Greece and Gaza. Our work is shaped by the knowledge, experiences, and leadership of people from displaced communities themselves. RBB provides support including food distributions, clothing, hygiene items, baby supplies, emergency relief, water deliveries, and casework support, while also highlighting gaps in aid systems and the realities faced by people who are too often overlooked. We continue supporting communities even when media attention and international focus decline. Alongside frontline humanitarian work, RBB raises awareness through storytelling, advocacy, campaigns, and public engagement to challenge harmful narratives and encourage solidarity and action.

Story

Hello friends and family,

Thank you for taking the time to visit this page. I hope you are well :)

I am currently out in Athens volunteering for an organisation called Refugee Biriyani & Banana’s (RBB). RBB is a UK registered charity (charity no. 1189561) that started in 2015 in response to the refugee crisis in Europe. It is an amazing organisation that currently has projects in Athens and Chios. In Athens, RBB runs a ‘free shop’ style distribution center where people from refugee communities can come and choose from a range of food and non-food items. The range includes spices and foods that have been chosen by people from refugee communities, to enable them to cook and create the meals and food they want.

Working closely with people from refugee communities, RBB listens and responds to their changing needs, and provides aid in a dignified, fair and sustainable way. They also have a helpline and an outreach system to identify those needing the most support and can refer people for legal, educational, medical and integration support as needed.

I have been out in Athens since the beginning of January and have seen how carefully they spend and account for every penny that is donated. Being a small organisation they do not have big overheads and so all donations go directly to where it’s needed the most!

To give you an idea of what donations can provide:

£50 = a food and hygiene pack + a winter sleeping bag + a fresh food voucher

£30 = a food and hygiene pack

£15 = a winter sleeping bag

£5 = a voucher to buy fresh fruit/vegetables, eggs or meat

£5 = A hygiene pack

As in the UK, inflation has caused food prices in Greece to increase. Now is a particularly challenging time for all organistations working with people from refugee communities, and so any donation, whatever the size, would be so gratefully received :)

If you would like to know more about RBB and the work they do you can visit their website at: Refugee Biriyani & Bananas: Aid Distribution For Refugees (refugeebiriyanibananas.org) or you can email me: arthur.clw@gmail.com and I will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Thank you and lots of love,

Arthur x
