We support medical training in Malawi to enhance skills and improve healthcare

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page!

For many years, Fellows and Members of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) have worked tirelessly to help improve the health services available in Malawi. We know that we can make a difference to the lives of people in Malawi by improving the medical education and training available to them.

Initially, we intend to focus on providing education and training in the capital city of L
ilongwe however we aspire to increase our geographical stretch over time. We have already supported various work in other locations across the country including funding trainee secondments and supporting projects run by our Fellows and Members.

PROGRESS UPDATE:
How our money is making a difference:
In June 2009, RCPSG successfully delivered it's first Basic Surgical Skills Course in Kamuzu Central Hospital, Lilongwe. The course was enthusiastically recieeved and we look forward to delivering future training events.

In July, we sent the first shipment of equipment to Lilongwe to start creating the medical library in the hospital.

Supporting The Fund
To fund our work, the College has set up this Malawi Fund and we will be fundraising in various ways to support the implementation of our planned programme.

At present, our fundraising activities include:

- Glasgow Women's 10K
Six College staff members will all be Making Tracks for Malawi and running the Women's 10k in Glasgow on Sunday 10th May.

UPDATE: Well done to Kirsty, Anne, Donna, Lynsey, Gerri and Caryn who all completed the Women's 10K in or around the 1 hour mark. A great effort by all!!

- Men's Health Forum Scotland 10K
College CEO, Dr Jim Miller will also be Making Tracks for the Malawi fund by running the Men's Health Forum Scotland 10K on Sunday 21st June.

UPDATE: A huge congratulations to Jim who completed the Men's 10K in a very impressive time of 53 minutes and 44 seconds!

College staff took part in both these races to help raise funds to support our planned programme of development in Lilongwe and we hope you can help us to make a difference. We will be planning future fundraising events so watch this space!
