In the early hours of the morning on 6 February, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck in the south-east of Turkey, close to the Syrian border. A second earthquake, of magnitude 7.5, struck later that day in the same area.

Almost 6,000 buildings have collapsed and more than 33,000 people have died so far, with the number expected to double.

Our read-a-thon is raising money for Turkey Mozaik Foundation, a UK registered charity that works with grassroots organisations in Turkey.

They are helping survivors to recover from the devastating effects of the earthquakes.
