Story

On June 7th we are going to be joining in the Jessops superhero walk which raises money for Jessops hospital. Like most people, we always had a soft spot for Jessops and how amazing they are at helping mums and babies, but on November 28th 2019 we had our own little reason for wanting to support their charity. While I was pregnant with Heidi we found out during a scan that she had Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). This means that her heart intermittently races extremely fast. We had appointments at Leeds heart hospital and many appointments at Jessops and I was put on heart medication to pass through to baby Heidi to help her keep stable while she was growing. The consultants at Leeds told us that if her SVT was not intermittent then she wouldn’t have made it as her tiny little heart would have been too tired. Hearing this was so heartbreaking, but we also felt blessed that she could be helped. It was a very scary time for us, not really knowing what it meant for Heidi once she was born. We were told we would have paediatricians in the room as she was born in case she needed immediate help. Her birth was actually really amazing and luckily she didn’t need the help straight away. It wasn’t until I was moved to the ward that they came to take her to neonatal. Unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to go down with her because I had to go for a scan myself and this was extremely hard, to have my newborn baby taken away without me. Her daddy had gone home for a rest so he wasn’t there either, but luckily her auntie Laura was with us and they let her go down to settle her in. The paediatricians were great, they came up three times over the next couple of hours to put my mind at rest and tell me she was in safe hands. When I was finally able to go and see her it was so overwhelming seeing my beautiful, tiny newborn covered in wires attached to all the machines. The nurses were amazing. They came straight over to tell me what everything was for, what the plan was and how I could still care for her. Heidi was in neonatal for 6 days altogether, the longest 6 days of our lives. But during that time she was formally diagnosed with SVT, put on medication and closely monitored to be sure it suited her and was working correctly, and most importantly she was fed, cuddled, cleaned and comforted by the nurses during the times I couldn’t be there with her. The day after she came home was my birthday and the nurses made me a beautiful card with a photo of Heidi on, nobody had told them it was my birthday they had found out themselves. It literally made my day receiving such a special gesture. When she was being discharged they packed her a little bag with the tiny blood pressure monitor, stethoscope and all her little wires for me to keep safe and one day show Heidi and tell her all about it. Since Heidi has been home she’s been doing great and her consultants are really pleased with her. We are hoping that over the next few years, as her heart matures she will grow out of the condition, so fingers crossed 🤞🏻 So, to say a huge thank you to jessops for everything they did for us, we are hoping to raise a little money to go to the neonatal unit. It’s a wonderful place that works so hard to save precious little lives and although we hope nobody reading this would ever need to rely on it, you can be sure if you did they do everything possible to help those little miracles. Please help us by sponsoring our superhero walk, even if it’s just £1... every little helps! Thank you so much for reading 💖
