Alex's Story
On Friday 24th September 2022 at 2:20pm Alex was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, 2 weeks after his 2nd Birthday.
We were sent to the Hospital immediately, Alex had now started to throw up. On arrival he was tested, blood samples taken, gas levels and ketones....words that would all become common in our everyday vocabulary. Our little boy was taken to a High Dependency Room, hooked up to machines and was in DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis)
It was the longest weekend of our lives.
But through it all our little boy was an absolute superstar. Following 24 hours of fluids and insulin drip he was asking for food and his younger brother. He didn't flinch at all the finger pricks or needle injections. He just smiled his way through it all.
3 years on, and he is still our superstar. He is now on an insulin pump and sensor. Less finger pricks and needle injections but a new Dexcom every 10 days and a new pod every 3.
He has just started school and both Alex and ourselves have had to get use to the teachers dealing with his diabetes, trusting in someone else after so long, that they will be able to do what is needed.
At just 5 Alex has helped his teachers change sensors and pods as well as showing them how to do finger prick glucose tests.
Alex is our T1D Hero
So to help raise money for the much needed research and to raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes Alex is going to complete, The 62 Mile Challenge for Diabetes UK.
